Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a number calculated from weight and height that is used to estimate the degree of obesity or underweight.

Definition

Body mass index is an estimating tool that classifies weight relative to height. Doctors use it as part of the overall assessment, but on its own it is not enough to choose the right bariatric procedure.

Why it matters

BMI helps define the degree of obesity, but it does not decide by itself whether a patient needs a sleeve, a bypass or another procedure.

Common questions

Does BMI alone decide the type of surgery?

No. BMI is important but not sufficient on its own. Associated conditions, reflux, diabetes, eating habits and test results must also be assessed.
