Ali in his own words

Ali Al-Mukhtar from Iraq. I am 38, my old weight was 168 kg, my current weight is 91 kg, my height is 168 cm, and it has been 9 months. I had a mini gastric bypass.

I suffered from shortness of breath and could only sleep sitting up, with swelling in my legs and high blood pressure. I couldn’t sleep more than two hours because I couldn’t breathe.

But now, thank God, I sleep more than 8 or 9 hours straight, the snoring is gone, the swelling in my legs is gone, and the blood pressure is gone. Now I feel young again, as if I were 20, thank God.

Many thanks to Dr. Mohammad Al-Zaitawi, and many thanks to Sally as well.

Before surgery: two hours of sleep, sitting up

Ali weighed 168 kg at 168 cm, severe obesity with a BMI of nearly 60. Severe shortness of breath stopped him from lying down, so he slept sitting up and never more than two hours, alongside snoring, swollen legs and high blood pressure. That made mini gastric bypass the right choice for his high weight and obesity-related health problems.

After 9 months: 77 kg lighter and 9 hours of sleep

After mini gastric bypass and follow-up with dietitian Sally, Ali reached 91 kg within 9 months. He now sleeps 8 to 9 hours straight, the snoring has stopped, his leg swelling has gone, his blood pressure has stabilized, and he says he feels “young again, like I’m 20”.

The journey, step by step

  1. Before surgery: 168 kg

Shortness of breath and only two hours of sleep sitting up, with snoring, swollen legs and high blood pressure.

  2. Medical assessment

Assessing severe obesity and its health problems, and choosing mini gastric bypass.

  3. Mini gastric bypass

Laparoscopic surgery with Dr. Mohammad Al-Zaitawi.

  4. Nutrition follow-up and gradual improvement

Follow-up with dietitian Sally, with breathing and sleep improving as weight came down.

  5. After 9 months: 91 kg

77 kg lost, 8–9 hours of continuous sleep, no snoring or leg swelling, stable blood pressure.

Doctor's comment

Shortness of breath when lying down, snoring and short sleep are common signs of obstructive sleep apnea linked to severe obesity, and these symptoms, along with leg swelling and blood pressure, often improve clearly as weight comes down. Losing 77 kg in 9 months is an excellent result. We remind patients that any change to blood pressure medication must be supervised by a doctor, and that bypass patients need lifelong vitamins and supplements and regular blood tests. Results vary from patient to patient.

Frequently asked questions

How much weight did Ali Al-Mukhtar lose after mini gastric bypass?

He went from 168 kg to 91 kg, a loss of 77 kg, within 9 months of surgery.

Do snoring and sleep apnea improve after bariatric surgery?

In many cases obstructive sleep apnea and snoring improve clearly as weight comes down, and some patients can stop using their night-time breathing machine after reassessment by a specialist. The degree of improvement varies from patient to patient.

Why can I only sleep sitting up with obesity?

Excess weight around the neck, chest and abdomen presses on the airway and lungs when lying down, causing breathlessness, snoring and repeated pauses in breathing. These symptoms need a medical assessment and often improve with weight loss.

Do blood pressure and leg swelling improve after gastric bypass?

Many patients notice lower blood pressure and less leg swelling as they lose weight, but adjusting or stopping blood pressure medication must only be done under a doctor’s supervision with regular readings.
