Hassan in his own words

Hassan Rafea Al-Mukhtar from Iraq, born in 1981. I had stomach reduction surgery (a sleeve). Previous weight 187.5 kg; after a year and two months my current weight is 93, and the weight is still coming down.

Of course, if I start talking about my life before the surgery, I will never finish. Naturally life was complicated, everything was hard, and my mood was depressed. Social occasions were off-limits for me, the hardest and most miserable outing was going to the market, moving was heavy of course, not to mention the embarrassing situations I used to face.

But by God’s grace, my decision to have the surgery was the best decision of my life. Thank God my whole life changed, my self-confidence grew, and my personality changed as my mood changed for the better, of course.

As for complications and side effects after the surgery, thank God I had no problems and everything was normal, because I followed the instructions of the doctor and the dietitian.

From this platform I thank Dr. Mohammad Abdulwahab Al-Zaitawi for his efforts with me, because thanks to him, after God, I reached my goal, praise be to God. Finally, I advise everyone suffering from obesity never to hesitate to take this step, and I guarantee it will be the best decision to change their life. I repeat my thanks to Dr. Mohammad Al-Zaitawi, and my thanks also go to his medical team. May God reward you a million times over.

Hassan’s life before surgery

Hassan weighed 187.5 kg, a level of severe obesity that made daily life complicated: heavy movement, simple outings like going to the market turned into an ordeal, he avoided social occasions, faced repeated embarrassing situations and felt depressed. After a full medical assessment, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy was chosen as the right option for him, and he traveled from Iraq to Jordan for the surgery.

No complications and full commitment to instructions

The period after surgery went normally without any notable complications or side effects, which Hassan attributes to fully following his surgeon’s and dietitian’s instructions on food stages, fluids and vitamins. This commitment is one of the most important factors in reducing complications and speeding recovery after bariatric surgery.

Life a year and two months later

Hassan reached 93 kg after a year and two months, a loss of 94.5 kg, and his weight is still coming down. His life has changed completely: his self-confidence has grown, his mood has improved, and moving around, running errands and attending occasions are now a normal part of his day. He calls the surgery the best decision of his life.

The journey, step by step

  1. Before surgery: 187.5 kg

Severe obesity with heavy movement, avoiding occasions, embarrassing situations and a depressed mood.

  2. The decision and travel from Iraq

Deciding on surgery and traveling to Jordan for a medical assessment at Dr. Mohammad Al-Zaitawi’s center.

  3. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy

A successful operation and a recovery without complications, with a gradual move from liquids to normal food.

  4. Following medical and nutrition instructions

Full commitment to food stages, vitamins and the dietitian’s advice, with steady weight loss.

  5. After a year and two months: 93 kg

94.5 kg lost with weight still coming down, more self-confidence and a normal life.

Doctor's comment

Hassan’s experience shows that the impact of bariatric surgery goes beyond kilograms: losing 94.5 kg from 187.5 kg completely changed his mobility, mood and social life. A recovery without complications is linked to a good assessment before surgery and the patient following instructions afterwards. As his weight continues to come down, we advise keeping up protein, vitamins and regular follow-up. The same result cannot be guaranteed for every patient; results vary with starting weight, health and commitment.

He went from 187.5 kg to 93 kg, a loss of 94.5 kg, within a year and two months of surgery, and his weight is still coming down.

Is sleeve gastrectomy suitable for someone over 180 kg?

Does mood improve after bariatric surgery?

In many patients self-confidence, mood and social life improve clearly as weight comes down and movement becomes easier, though emotional support is important when needed during this period of change.
