Mohammed in his own words

From Bahrain, Mohammed Jasim. Previous weight 140 kg, current weight 85 kg, a loss of 55 kg in ten months, thank God.

I will never forget the moment I found out I had early diabetes. Because the disease runs in my family, it felt as if I had lost every good moment in life, and the whole world turned dark. I was going round in a vicious circle: whether I was upset or happy, I would reward myself with meals and food that ruined my health more and more, then I would be upset with myself, and day by day it got worse.

Then a friend pointed me to Dr. Mohammad Al-Zaitawi’s clinic. They did everything for me and managed to arrange all the procedures and tests even though I gave them very short notice. Thank God the surgery went well, and I can say the hardest part is the battle inside your mind until it accepts that you are really going to change your habits and how much you eat, and that exercise is a must.

Day by day, as my health improved, my inner motivation grew and grew, and my love of unhealthy food faded from my head. I now fall asleep easily, without choking and without snoring. Moving is much easier, going up and down stairs; I even like to park far away and walk, or just walk to my errands. I stopped taking Panadol and painkillers. I started attending events I used to avoid, and my self-confidence grew. I now dress up and look sharp and every option is available, unlike before, when it was embarrassing, and even if you found something in your size it didn’t look good.

I understand my body and the food it needs much better, and I have come to love my health and want to keep it, because without it I won’t be any use to my family, my work or anyone; I would only be a burden on them.

Life has become more beautiful with good health. Praise and thanks to God first, and then to Dr. Mohammad and the whole team, who did everything for us down to the smallest detail and were patient with us.

Early diabetes and the cycle of emotional eating

Mohammed weighed 140 kg when he was diagnosed with early diabetes, and with a family history of the disease he felt his life had been turned upside down. He was stuck in a vicious circle of emotional eating: rewarding himself with food whether happy or upset, then blaming himself, with his condition getting worse day by day.

Fast arrangements and the battle of the mind

A friend pointed him to Dr. Mohammad Al-Zaitawi’s clinic, and the team arranged all the procedures and tests despite the short notice. The surgery went smoothly, and Mohammed says the hardest part was the inner battle until his mind accepted changing how and how much he ate and committing to exercise. As his health improved his motivation grew and his craving for unhealthy food faded.

After 10 months: 85 kg and a better life

Mohammed reached 85 kg, a loss of 55 kg. He now falls asleep easily without choking or snoring, climbs stairs easily, chooses to walk to his errands, no longer needs Panadol or painkillers, attends events he used to avoid and wears what he likes with confidence. Most importantly, he now understands his body and its needs and looks after his health for his family and his work.

Doctor's comment

An early diabetes diagnosis is an important warning sign, and weight loss is one of the strongest ways to improve insulin sensitivity and stop the disease progressing, especially with a family history. As Mohammed described so precisely, the real challenge after surgery is psychological and behavioral: a sleeve reduces hunger, but changing your relationship with food is what protects the result. Choking and snoring during sleep can be signs of obstructive sleep apnea, and they improve greatly with weight loss. We recommend checking HbA1c regularly. Results vary from patient to patient.
